If you are struggling to afford groceries each month, you may be wondering how to sign up for food stamps in Maryland. The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is also commonly referred to as food stamps. In Maryland, the program is called the Food Supplement Program.

There are three ways to apply for food stamps in MD. You may apply:

  • Online.
  • By mail.
  • In-person.

Regardless of how you choose to apply, you will be required to attend a SNAP interview after submitting your application. You will also need to provide specific information throughout each step of the application process.

What do you need to apply for food stamps in Maryland?

You will need to provide specific information in order to apply for food stamps in Maryland. You can expect to be asked for the following information:

  • Your name and contact information
  • The demographic information of your household
  • Your household’s income information
  • Your household expenses
  • Social Security numbers (SSNs) for each member of the household

In addition to simply providing information about your income and expenses, you should also prepare documentation, such as pay stubs and bills, to provide to the DHS when you apply for SNAP.

Applying for Maryland Food Stamps Online

You may apply food stamps online through the state’s online portal. To use the online food stamp application, you will need to create an account in the system. This will consist of creating a username and password that is unique to you.

Once you create an account and begin the application, you may save your progress and return to the application at a later time.

Submitting a Maryland Food Stamp Application by Mail

If you would prefer not to apply online, you may also apply for food stamps in MD by mail. You will need to obtain the correct food stamp application in order to do this. You may get an application from your local DHS office in person or request one to be mailed by contacting your local office. You may also download the PDF application from the DHS website.

Be sure to provide your name and contact information, and remember to sign and date the application. The DHS will contact you about your interview once they receive the application.

Applying for SNAP In-Person in Maryland

If you wish to apply for food stamps in person, you will also need to complete a food stamp application form. Be sure to fill out as much information as you can and sign and date the application.

Then, take your application to your local DHS office. The office will accept the application even if they are unable to interview you on the same day. If you do not have your SNAP interview immediately, you will be contacted with the date of the interview to continue the application process.

Checking Your SNAP Application Status in Maryland

If you submitted a Maryland food stamp application online, then you may check the status of your application by logging back into your account on the state’s web portal. To do so, you will need to use the same login information that you created when you originally applied online.  When you log in, you should be able to view your SNAP application status. You will learn whether or not the application is in process, approved or denied.

You may also contact the local DHS office where you submitted your application to ask about its status.

Maryland Food Stamps Interview Process

You must complete a food stamp interview after you submit your initial application. Interviews may be completed in person or over the phone if you are unable to attend an in-person interview for reasons such as work or a disability.

During your interview, a representative from the DHS will ask you specific questions about your household situation. You may also be asked to provide verification of claims that you made on your food stamp application, such as proof of income and expenses.

Finally, the representative will describe the program requirements for SNAP benefits in detail. This will be a good opportunity to ask any questions you may have about the program, such as how long the processing should take and when you might expect to receive benefits.

About SNAP Recertification in Maryland

If you wish to continue receiving benefits, you must apply for SNAP recertification before your benefit period expires. Applying for recertification typically requires the same amount and kind of information that was required. For example, you will still need to provide an interview and verification of documents regarding your income and expenses.

The purpose of a food stamp renewal in MD is to ensure that all families who are receiving food stamps are still eligible for the program. Often, changes to an individual’s employment or expenses can impact whether or not they need to remain in the program.

You will be notified of the date that your benefits expire. If you do not apply for a food stamp renewal by this date, it may result in a temporary loss of benefits in between application periods.

About Appealing a Food Stamps Denial in Maryland

If your application for Maryland food stamps is denied, you have the right to file an appeal of the decision. In order to do so, you must notify your SNAP office in writing or by phone that you would like to request a fair hearing.

During the hearing to appeal food stamps, it will be your responsibility to prove to the judge that your case decision was incorrect. That means you will need to provide the same income and expense information that you provided at the time you originally applied.

However, you will also need to provide additional information if you wish to successfully make your case. This may include witnesses or supplemental documentation that you did not supply on your original application.
